Injury Attorney for Wilmington and the Cape Fear Coast

If you were hurt in a crash anywhere in the Cape Fear region, I can come to you, whether you live here or were visiting the coast. We start with a phone or video call. Then I meet you in person where you are, and we decide in that meeting whether to work together.

This region carries beach traffic as well as the commuter roads around Camp Lejeune.

Below I cover those highways, what a visitor needs to know after going home, the designated trauma centers in Wilmington and at Camp Lejeune, how to order a Troop B crash report from another state, and the first conversation.

01

I-40 into Wilmington, I-140 at Leland and the Wrightsville bridges

I-40, I-140 and U.S. 17

I-40 comes in from Duplin County and runs through Pender into New Hanover, crossing the Northeast Cape Fear River on the way to Wilmington. In Brunswick County, a six-mile section of I-140 near Leland runs between U.S. 17 and U.S. 74.

U.S. 17 carries traffic through Leland and south to Supply. U.S. 74/76 crosses Columbus County near Bolton toward the Brunswick line, and an I-74 feasibility study NCDOT completed in 2005 looked at a corridor that follows U.S. 74/76 from Whiteville to west of Bolton, then turns south to U.S. 17 at Supply.

The three Wrightsville Beach bridges

At Wrightsville Beach, two U.S. 74 bridges over Lees Cut and Banks Channel and a U.S. 76 bridge on Causeway Drive carry residents and vacationers to the island, and NCDOT plans to replace all three. Work on the smaller U.S. 74 bridge over Lees Cut is expected to begin by the end of 2026, and that bridge will not close for replacement until after Labor Day.

Jacksonville and the Camp Lejeune back gate

In Onslow County, the U.S. 17 Bypass carries Jacksonville traffic. N.C. 172 runs to the back gate of Camp Lejeune, and NCDOT's widening contract on it barred lane closures during the morning and evening rush.

Vacation traffic and base commuters share these roads with people who live here year round.

Does going home after a coast crash pause the deadline?

Going home does not pause the North Carolina deadline. Under G.S. 1-52(5) and 1-52(16), the general limit for a personal injury claim in North Carolina is three years, and the claim accrues when the bodily harm becomes apparent or reasonably ought to have.

3 yearspersonal injury, G.S. 1-52(5) and 1-52(16)
2 yearswrongful death, counted from the date of death, G.S. 1-53(4)

Exception. A wrongful death claim has its own two-year limit under G.S. 1-53(4), measured from the date of death.

A visitor does not have to come back to North Carolina to start. The crash report can be ordered by mail from home, and the steps are in the section on Troop B reports.

03

New Hanover in Wilmington and the Level III center at Camp Lejeune

Two hospitals in the Cape Fear counties are on the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services list of designated trauma centers. Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington is listed at Level II, first designated in 1989, and Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune is listed at Level III, first designated in 2018.

Naval Medical Center Camp LejeuneCamp LejeuneLevel III

The OEMS page also explains the review cycle. A designated center gets a renewal site visit three years after its first state designation and every four years after that, or every three years when it pairs state renewal with an American College of Surgeons visit.

Both coastal centers sit inside the region, one in New Hanover County and one on the Marine Corps base.

A designation on this list is about the hospital. Where a given injured person is taken is a separate question, and the list does not answer it.

04

Ordering a Troop B crash report by mail from another state

All six Cape Fear counties fall under the State Highway Patrol's Troop B, headquartered in Fayetteville, according to its ncshp.gov troop page. The Patrol typically takes a crash outside city limits, and a town with its own police most likely responds inside its limits, as a Patrol first sergeant explained in an NCDPS interview.

Find the report number

A Troop B crash appears in the NCDPS Collision Information search by county, name or report number, and a new report can take up to 48 hours to show up.

Fill out form TR-67A

The NCDMV form asks for the driver's name and license number, the crash date and the county of the crash, plus your own ID type, number and issuing state.

Mail it with a check

Send it to the Crash Reports Unit, 3106 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27697-3106, with a check payable to NCDMV for $6.50. Cash is not accepted by mail.

Allow ten business days

The DMV asks for ten business days to process a request by mail, and an individual receives a redacted copy.

A certified copy from the Division is admissible in any court proceeding the same way as the original, without further certification, under G.S. 20-42(b).

On the island, the Wrightsville Beach Police Department says copies of its reports can be picked up at the department, requested by mail to PO Box 452, or obtained through CRASHDOCS.

05

Meeting at a rental house, your home or near Lejeune

If you are still in the area, at a rental house or your own home, I can come to you there after a first phone or video call. Whether we work together is decided in that meeting.

A crash with a federal vehicle near the base follows the federal claim rules. Under 28 U.S.C. 2675(a), the claim goes to the federal agency first, and a lawsuit waits for a written denial or six months of silence.

The military residency rule in the venue statute applies at Camp Lejeune the same way it applies at Fort Bragg, and the Sandhills page explains it.

If you have already gone back to another state, the phone or video conversation works the same from there, and the meeting waits until you are back in North Carolina.
