Getting Your Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Crash Report

A crash report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is free when you collect it at the Records Division at 601 E. Trade Street or at a CMPD division office counter. The same report costs $9.00 through LexisNexis online. Either way you complete CMPD's request form and certify that federal law lets you receive it.

Crash reports in Charlotte

A CMPD crash report records what the investigator found at a Charlotte crash, and in our first conversation I want to know whether you already hold yours. In Charlotte the crash may have been handled by a sworn CMPD officer, a CMPD civilian investigator or, on campus, UNC Charlotte's police, and the campus report comes through a different route than CMPD's.

What follows covers CMPD's fee split, the thirteen division counters, the request form and who can sign it, reports from civilian investigators, the campus and town departments, and the NCDMV copy.

01

No charge at a CMPD counter, $9.00 through LexisNexis

CMPD crash reports are free of charge at the Police Headquarters counter or any division office, according to the CMPD Records page, and cost $9.00 through the LexisNexis Accident Reporting system. According to the Records page, the Records Division is in the lobby of Police Headquarters at 601 E. Trade Street, with hours listed as 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Paying for the online copy is a choice. The CMPD Records page lists no charge for a crash report collected at a counter.

CMPD's Records Division handles requests for alternative formats and language access at 704-336-2848, per the Crime and Crash Reports page.

02

Thirteen CMPD division offices where a Charlotte crash report is free

CMPD divides its jurisdiction into 13 patrol divisions, and its Crime and Crash Reports page lets a requester bring the form and photo ID to a CMPD Division Office instead of headquarters. The same page says the blank form is kept at the Law Enforcement Center and at the division offices.

The patrol division page lists sergeants' shift times for most divisions and no counter hours, while the Records page, in its section on incident reports, gives division offices the hours of 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays. Call the division before making the trip.

Exception. CMPD lists Airport Law Enforcement separately from the 13 divisions, at 601 E. Trade Street and 704-336-2260. A 2025 story from Charlotte Douglas International Airport counts its CMPD division as one of fourteen police divisions in the city.

Who can sign CMPD's Request for Motor Vehicle Crash Report Form?

The September 2021 revision of CMPD's Request for Motor Vehicle Crash Report Form offers four boxes to check: the requester drove a vehicle in the crash, is the registered owner of one, rode in one as a passenger, or qualifies under an exception listed on the reverse side. The form explains that crash reports are motor vehicle records protected by the Driver's Privacy Protection Act, a federal law.

Fill in the Charlotte crash details

Its top lines take when the crash happened, then who was driving along with that person's license number, then the names of the registered owner and of a passenger.

Check each basis that fits you

Check every box that applies, or write in the number of the exception you rely on.

Sign, date and show photo ID

CMPD staff verify identity from a government-issued photo ID and record its number and type on the form.

Exception. A person who was not in the crash can still qualify under one of the eleven reasons on the back of the form. The last of them covers a requester who holds the individual's written consent and can show proof of it.

The form also warns that improper release and false statements are prohibited, and the requester signs to affirm that the information given is accurate.

Reports written by CMPD's civilian crash investigators

A CMPD civilian crash investigator completes either a DMV-349 crash report or a non-reportable report, according to the Civilian Crash Investigation Unit FAQ, and a sworn officer or supervisor reviews every one. G.S. 20-4.01(33b) makes a motor vehicle crash reportable in three cases: it kills or hurts someone, it causes $1,000 or more in total property damage, or it damages, by whatever amount, a vehicle that was seized under G.S. 20-28.3.

G.S. 20-166.1(e) has the investigating officer make a written report within 24 hours of a reportable crash. CMPD's report pages do not say how long a report takes to reach the counter after that.

Bring whichever report the investigator wrote, DMV-349 or non-reportable, to our first meeting.

Crash reports for the UNC Charlotte campus and Mecklenburg towns

For a wreck on the UNC Charlotte campus, the investigating agency is UNC Charlotte Police and Public Safety, and its FAQ states that the NCDMV is the only place to get the traffic crash report. Incident reports, which are separate from crash reports, come from the Police and Public Safety office at 9151 Cameron Blvd.

The NCDMV copy of a Charlotte report on form TR-67A

A second copy of a Charlotte crash report can come from the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. Its request form for individuals is the TR-67A, which can be mailed in or handed over at one of two counters the NCDMV lists, in Raleigh and in Huntersville. Online ordering is closed to individuals, per the NCDMV crash reports page. The NCDMV fee of $6.50 per report comes from G.S. 20-42(b), and the agency asks for 10 business days from receipt.

For a crash CMPD handled, the free counter copy comes first and the NCDMV is the fallback.

An individual's NCDMV copy comes redacted, meaning some personal details, names or addresses for instance, are hidden from it. With the report in your hands, the Charlotte city page covers the venue rule and the Mecklenburg courthouse, the crash numbers for Charlotte hold the city's 2024 figures, and a visit request starts on the contact page.

Questions

Common questions

Can I get a CMPD crash report by email?

CMPD's Crime and Crash Reports page lists email, at CMPDPoliceRecords@cmpd.org, as a route for incident reports. For crash reports the same page names two routes once the request form is complete, which are in person at a CMPD counter or online through LexisNexis.

Do I need a report number to request a CMPD crash report?

CMPD's request form does not ask for a report number. It asks for the date of the crash, the driver's name with driver's license number, the registered owner's name and a passenger's name, followed by the certification and a signature.

Can someone pick up my Charlotte crash report for me?

CMPD's request form lists, among the reasons printed on its back, a requester who holds the individual's written consent and can show proof of it. That person checks the exception box, writes in the exception number, signs the form and shows a government-issued photo ID.
