Fayetteville and Cumberland County Crash Figures for 2024

The 2024 state crash book gives Fayetteville thirty fatalities in its city row, and the pedestrian columns of that same row carry fourteen. Cumberland County deaths in 2024 ran above the county's printed ten-year average. None of those totals says who caused the crash that hurt you.

The figures come from two sources, the NCDMV's Crash Facts book for 2024 and NCDOT's 2024 crash profile for Cumberland County. Numbers live in the tables and tiles. The paragraphs are for what a number means to a person injured in Fayetteville, and they carry as few digits as I can manage.

Below are the Fayetteville city row, its pedestrian and bicycle columns, eleven years of Cumberland County deaths, the county's crashes by severity, the teen table and the school bus count, and the limits of all of it.

01

Fayetteville's 4,471 crashes in the state's 2024 table of cities

City Crash Data, the Section 4 listing of the 2024 edition, gives Fayetteville 4,471 crashes in its All group, along with 30 fatalities and 1,967 injuries.

4,471crashes in the Fayetteville row, 2024
30fatalities in the Fayetteville row, 2024
1,967injuries in the Fayetteville row, 2024

Statewide, the book's summary page counts 284,546 crashes for 2024, and it puts the number killed at 1,732 and the number injured at 113,602. That summary speaks of persons killed and of persons injured. The city table's headings for the same counts read Fatalities and Injuries.

Crashes4,471284,546
Deaths301,732
Injuries1,967113,602

Crashes are events. Deaths and injuries are people, so those two columns cannot be added to the first one.

02

Fourteen pedestrian fatalities in Fayetteville's 2024 row

Fayetteville's 2024 row lists 81 pedestrian crashes with 14 fatalities and 70 injuries. Its bicycle columns list 12 crashes with 15 injuries and no fatalities, and its alcohol columns list 111 crashes with 3 fatalities and 73 injuries.

Column groupCrashes countedFatalitiesInjuries
All4,471301,967
Alcohol111373
Pedestrian811470
Bicycle12015

By the printed figures, pedestrian crashes make up a sliver of the Fayetteville crash count and close to half of the deaths in the row. The table is silent on whether a single crash appears in two groups.

The city table splits the Fayetteville row three ways, by alcohol, pedestrian and bicycle, and in no other way. Street names, hours and vehicle types never appear in it.

Eleven years of Cumberland County deaths, from 38 to 62

Cumberland County's line in the book's ten-year death table shows 58 people killed in 2024 and 62 in 2023, with 51 printed as the 10 Year Average.

The ten years from 2014 through 2023 average 50.5 by my arithmetic, matching the printed 51 after rounding, and the 2024 count of 58 sits above it. Cumberland County deaths stayed at 55 or more in every year from 2019 on, after five years between 38 and 45.

A Fayetteville road death opens a separate claim with its own limitations period under G.S. 1-53(4), explained on our wrongful death page.

04

Cumberland County's 7,439 reportable crashes sorted by severity

NCDOT's 2024 crash profile for Cumberland County counts 7,439 reportable crashes that year, made up of 57 fatal crashes, 1,984 crashes with a non-fatal injury and 5,398 with property damage alone. NCDOT publishes a profile like it for each county by year.

Total7,4393,2057,499.63,392.0

In the Fatal row the profile prints 58 under Injuries, the same number the Crash Facts gives for people killed in Cumberland County in 2024. The Total of 3,205 equals that 58 plus the 3,147 on the injury row.

Exception. G.S. 20-4.01(33b) excludes a crash with no death or injury and total property damage below $1,000, unless the damaged property includes a car taken in a G.S. 20-28.3 seizure, where any amount counts. A minor Fayetteville fender bender of that kind sits outside the profile's count.

05

The Cumberland County teen table and school bus count for 2024

The book's teen table by county gives Cumberland County 1,108 crashes, 1 fatality and 230 injuries for 2024. Its school bus table by county gives the county 33 school bus crashes, with 8 injuries and no fatalities.

Neither county table carries a note of its own. The book's notes on how teen crashes are counted sit with its statewide teen table instead.

Getting 2025 figures from the NCDMV by email

The NCDMV archive posts Crash Facts editions for download through 2024. The Division's Crash Facts page directs anyone wanting the 2025 report to operations-support@ncdot.gov, and this page stays with the posted 2024 edition.

All of the Fayetteville and Cumberland County numbers above come from 2024 data.

06

What Fayetteville crash figures cannot decide in your case

A Fayetteville crash total adds up twelve months of crashes citywide, and fault in one particular crash is outside what it records. Fault is settled one crash at a time, on what happened in that one.

A county death count describes Cumberland County as a whole. The way your own crash unfolded is what a claim rests on, and no county total records that.

The report on your crash is the document to get first. The Fayetteville crash report page explains the city search and the other agencies, and the Fayetteville city page describes our opening call and the meeting that comes next.

Questions

Common questions

Does Fayetteville's 2024 crash row include crashes on Fort Bragg?

The table itself is silent on it. No note printed with that city listing says if crashes on the installation land in the Fayetteville row, so that table leaves the question open for 2024.

Are Fayetteville's 30 fatalities part of Cumberland County's 58?

The two tables do not cross-reference each other. The Fayetteville figure is one row in the book's table of cities, while the county figure in its ten-year death table covers the whole of Cumberland County, inside and outside the Fayetteville city limits.

How do I get Cumberland County crash numbers for 2025?

Send a request to operations-support@ncdot.gov. The NCDMV's Crash Facts page names that address for copies of the 2025 report, and the archive's downloadable editions end at 2024, which is why the Fayetteville and Cumberland figures here are 2024 figures.
