Injury Attorney for Greensboro, Winston-Salem and the Triad
If you were hurt in a crash anywhere in the Triad, I can come to you. Call or set up a video conversation first. After that we meet in person at your home or wherever you are recovering, and that meeting is where we decide whether to work together.
My office is in Graham, so the Triad is close to home for this practice. Alamance and Caswell are covered by juliandoby.com, and this page covers the rest of the region.
It sets out the loop, the beltway and the interstates through these counties, what a tractor-trailer adds to a case, the two designated trauma centers in Winston-Salem and Greensboro, how Troop D and Troop E split the crash reports, and what happens once you call.
01
The Greensboro Urban Loop, the I-74 beltway and I-285 to Lexington
Two loops around two cities
NCDOT completed the Greensboro Urban Loop when its last section opened in January 2023. Interstate 840 is the designation on the northern part of the loop, from I-40/85 on the east side of the city to I-40 on the west.
Winston-Salem is building a beltway of its own. NCDOT calls the Eastern Loop of the Northern Beltway part of the I-74 corridor, and its newest sections, which NCDOT set to open in September 2026, connect U.S. 421, I-40 and existing I-74 southeast of the city.
South to Lexington, north to Mayodan and the Yadkin River
South of Winston-Salem, the 23-mile stretch of U.S. 52 down to I-85 in Lexington carries the Interstate 285 designation. I-85 continues through Davidson County into Randolph, and NCDOT has had crews on the stretch between Thomasville and Archdale.
Up north, NCDOT has awarded a contract to replace the bridge over U.S. 220 at the U.S. 311/N.C. 135 interchange in Mayodan, in Rockingham County, so the interchange can accommodate future Interstate 73, and NCDOT expects that work to be finished by fall 2028. I-77 crosses the Yadkin River between Yadkin and Surry counties. U.S. 52 runs through Pilot Mountain in Surry on its way north.
NCDOT says the loop lets traffic bypass the city and eases congestion on the section that carries I-40, I-85 Business and U.S. 29, 70, 220 and 421. That much interstate in one region puts commuters and long-haul freight in the same lanes.
At a loop or beltway interchange that drivers are still learning, the signs and the merge layout matter as much as the drivers, in my judgment.

Who answers for a tractor-trailer crash on I-40 or I-85?
In a truck crash, I want to know first which motor carrier was operating the truck.
The USDOT number on both doors
Under 49 CFR 390.21T, a self-propelled commercial motor vehicle covered by the federal rules is marked with the carrier's legal name or single trade name and the USDOT number the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued to it. The marking goes on both sides of the vehicle and has to be readable from 50 feet in daylight while the truck is stopped.
A photo of that marking from the scene tells us which company to look for first.
In a truck case, I want that carrier's records requested early. The truck accident page covers this in more detail.

Wake Forest Baptist at Level I and Moses Cone at Level II
Two Triad hospitals are on the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services list of designated trauma centers. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem is listed at Level I, and Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro is listed at Level II.
| Hospital, as the state lists it | City | Level, as listed |
|---|---|---|
| Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist | Winston-Salem | Level I |
| Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital | Greensboro | Level II |
The same list shows Brenner Children's Hospital at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist with American College of Surgeons verification as a Level I pediatric center.
The list tells you where the designated centers are. It does not tell you which hospital any one injured person in the Triad will reach.

Troop D, Troop E or city police wrote your Triad crash report
A Triad crash report is held by the agency that investigated and, once forwarded, by the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. G.S. 20-166.1(e) also leaves a law enforcement agency free to give the public any crash report that is a public record.
| Patrol troop | Headquarters | Counties on this page |
|---|---|---|
| Troop D | Greensboro | Guilford, Rockingham, Randolph |
| Troop E | Salisbury | Forsyth, Davidson, Davie, Yadkin, Stokes, Surry |
A reportable crash, under G.S. 20-4.01(33b), is one that causes a death or an injury, or total property damage of $1,000 or more. G.S. 20-166.1(a) puts a duty on the driver of a vehicle in a reportable crash to notify the appropriate law enforcement agency immediately, by the quickest means of communication.
Find out who responded
A Patrol first sergeant said in an NCDPS interview that a crash outside city limits typically falls to the Patrol, while a city with its own police most likely responds inside its limits.
Get the city copy
Greensboro Police route online requests to LexisNexis and fill in-person requests at the Police Records desk at 100 Police Plaza with a government photo ID, for people involved, their attorneys and their insurers. Winston-Salem posts most reports on Police-2-Citizen and gives the public portion free in Room 130 of the Public Safety Center at 725 N. Cherry Street.
Order the certified copy
For a certified copy, the Patrol's public records page points to the NCDMV and G.S. 20-42, and the fee that statute sets for an accident report is $6.50.

Meeting in High Point, Asheboro or wherever you are recovering
We talk first by phone or video. After that I meet you in person in High Point or Asheboro or wherever you are. The meeting happens where you are, not at my desk.
