Requesting a Greensboro Police Crash Report Online or at 100 Police Plaza

LexisNexis carries Greensboro Police Department crash records online, and the headquarters records desk at 100 Police Plaza hands copies to a qualifying requester who shows a valid government-issued photo ID. The department releases them to people involved in the crash and to attorneys or insurers representing them. Neither of the city's pages on the process mentions a fee.

Crash reports in Greensboro

The crash report for a Greensboro collision is the DMV-349 the investigating officer completed, and I would like you to have a copy of your own before we meet.

Below are the Greensboro Police request routes and hours, the federal privacy certification and who qualifies, the under-$1,000 crashes that end with exchange slips, the UNCG Police and airport routes, what the DMV-349 records, and the NCDMV copy on form TR-67A.

01

Greensboro Police crash reports through LexisNexis, headquarters or a substation

The Greensboro Police Department offers two routes to a crash report: online through LexisNexis, or the Police Records desk in headquarters at 100 Police Plaza. The City of Greensboro's records page also lists pickup at Police Headquarters or at any substation during weekday hours, 8:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon.

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID to the Police Records desk. The department's crash report page names no other document for a request made there.

The Greensboro Police Department's Police to Citizen website also carries a Get a Crash Report option for looking up one specific report. The offices and phone numbers above are taken from the department's FAQ answer on obtaining police report copies.

02

Who qualifies for a Greensboro crash report under the federal privacy law?

A person asking the Greensboro Police Department for a crash report has to certify under the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act that they qualify, the department's crash report page says. That page then lists who may receive a copy.

People in the Greensboro collision

A vehicle operator, a registered or property owner, a passenger, or a pedestrian involved in the crash.

Representatives of a person involved

An attorney legally representing someone involved in the crash, or an insurance company representing one.

The NCDMV applies its own rule to the state's copy. Someone involved in the collision gets only a redacted NCDMV report, while a business or organization, such as a law office or an insurer, gets the unredacted report only after confirming that a permissible use applies to its request and submitting identification of its profession or agency status.

03

Greensboro crashes under $1,000 that end with exchange slips

A Greensboro crash with total damage under $1,000, where the officer did nothing beyond exchanging slips, needs no crash report, by the department's own account. In that situation the exchange slip is the paper you take home from the scene.

The same $1,000 figure appears in the state's definition of a reportable crash. Under the NCDMV's DMV-349 Instructional Manual, revised February 2023, a reportable crash must meet at least one of five criteria, among them a fatality or total property damage amounting to $1,000.00 or more, and it must occur on a trafficway.

Exception. G.S. 20-4.01(33b) counts a crash as reportable whenever a human being is killed or injured in it, no matter how little property damage it caused.

Hold on to the Greensboro exchange slip

When no report was written, the slip is the record you have from the scene.

Ask Greensboro Police Records about an injury crash

If someone was hurt, phone Police Records at 336-373-2435 and ask whether a report exists.

04

UNCG Police and PTI airport crash reports outside the city department

The UNC Greensboro Police Department fills out the NC DMV-349 for crashes it works, and its page says G.S. 132-1.4 makes those reports public record once protected information is redacted. Its electronic crash report database needs one of four details to find a report: the report's number, the day the crash happened, a driver's name, or the street it happened on.

UNCG Police does not supply a DMV-349 with certification, and its page sends anyone who needs one to the North Carolina Department of Transportation site. For a report copy by phone, UNCG Police Records is at 336.334.5963.

Auto accidents at Piedmont Triad International Airport

The Piedmont Triad Airport Authority Police Department describes a 4,000 acre airport campus and lists its address as 1000A Ted Johnson Parkway, Greensboro. Its page answers a question about an auto accident at PTI with a button to NCDMV crash reports, though the page never says the department writes crash reports itself.

On the UNCG campus or at PTI, your report may come from a department other than the city's. Before leaving, find out from the officer which agency will file it.

What a Greensboro DMV-349 records about each vehicle and driver

Every North Carolina law enforcement officer reporting a motor vehicle crash uses the DMV-349, according to the NCDMV's DMV-349 Instructional Manual. The manual labels a front and a back of the form and names the sections each one holds.

Part of the DMV-349Sections the manual names there
Front of DMV-349Driver Information, Owner Information, Pedestrian, Bicyclist, or Other, Emergency Medical Services, Vehicle Towed To/By
Statistical Code Boxes 1 through 32General Crash Information (1 to 7), Harmful Events/Contributing Circumstances Information (8 to 19), Commercial Motor Vehicle (20), Occupant and Non-Motorist Information (21 to 32)
Back of DMV-349Points of Initial Contact, Crash Sequence, Vehicle Information, Roadway Information, Work Zone Related, Crash Diagram (84), Narrative (85), Witnesses, Traffic Violations

Each vehicle's insurer and policy number go on the DMV-349. For federal, military and state-owned vehicles, the manual says the company entry should read Self-Insured.

Each vehicle's insurer and policy number go on the DMV-349.

Where a response fits none of the codes, the manual tells the officer to choose Other and give the specifics in the crash narrative.

The NCDMV's TR-67A route for a Greensboro crash report

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles also supplies Greensboro crash reports, and it takes requests on form TR-67A through the mail or in person, at either Raleigh Central Services or the Huntersville License Plate Agency. Its accident report fee, fixed by G.S. 20-42(b), is $6.50. The NCDMV wants 10 business days from the day it receives a request to process it, although an in-person request covering no more than five records can be filled immediately.

An individual cannot place an online crash report order with the NCDMV. Online orders are open only to a business or organization that is based in North Carolina or holds a license to operate there.

Questions

Yes. An insurance company representing someone involved in the crash is on the Greensboro Police Department's list of requesters who may receive a copy, once it certifies under the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act that it qualifies.

What if I lost my Greensboro crash report number?

Phone Greensboro Police Records at 336-373-2435 and ask what details they need to find the report, or go to Police Records at 100 Police Plaza with government-issued photo ID. If UNCG Police handled the crash, its database can also search on when the crash occurred, a driver's name or the street.

Does Greensboro Police list a fee for crash report copies?

No fee appears on the Greensboro Police Department's own crash report page or on the city's records page. The NCDMV charges $6.50 for its copy under G.S. 20-42(b), so ask Greensboro Police Records about any charge before you go to pick one up.
